Put Kids First in 2019
Martha Stone, Executive Director, Center for Children's Advocacy - Op-Ed, Hartford Courant

As we enter 2019, with a new governor and new legislature, there is much talk about where to focus energy and resources. Tolls, marijuana legalization, the state's population loss and municipal aid allocations are at the top of the Governor's and legislature's agenda. But something is missing…what about our kids?  Priorities that are critical to their well-being are absent from the policy lists garnering attention.

In a Hartford Courant op-ed, CCA Executive Director Martha Stone outlines seven essential reforms for 2019 – reforms that are urgent, compelling and long overdue:

1. Incentivize regionalization of schools and programs.

2. Expand health care access to immigrant youth.

3. Address the race discrimination in our child welfare and juvenile justice systems.

CCA in Action

James is six years old.

Last week, James packed his own lunch - a leftover hotdog and a couple of cookies - and went off to school. The morning was fine, but at lunchtime, when he took out the hotdog and a small knife to cut it, the teacher instantly panicked. She brought James and the knife to the principal's office.

James got suspended and the school threatened to expel him. CCA's involvement got James back into school. We prevented him from being expelled.

Children of color are much more likely to be suspended from school than white children - for the exact same behavior.
